About the Book

The story begins with a teenaged boy and his sister, who were homeless because of the sudden loss of their parents, who move into the hermit’s cabin and talk with the animals.

-Excerpts-
The wind whispered through the tall pines lining the ridge of Mt. Brockway, carrying the crisp scent of autumn. Golden leaves shimmered in the midday sun, casting flickering shadows along the rocky path. Something was changing. Bruno sat near the old oak on top of Mt. Brockway, ears flicking, listening – not to the wind, but to the way the earth responded. Sage, an owl, sat perched above on a maple tree branch near the old oak that hung out over the cabin and spread the wings. He had full intentions of checking out the hunting of small animals like squirrels, chippies, mice, or even larger animals like rabbits. He was bored here, having seen nothing all morning. They survived on wild berries until the apples had formed enough to eat. The talking bear had taught them how to forage.
